Hunter Valley Wedding Photography: Planning Your Wedding Photos

There is something pretty special about getting married in the Hunter Valley.

Between the vineyards, open paddocks, country properties, beautiful gardens and all the little corners you can find around the region, there is no shortage of places that photograph beautifully. But when you are planning a wedding, choosing a venue is only one part of it. You also have to think about your wedding photographs. How much time should you allow? When should you do your couple portraits? What happens if the weather changes? Where should you actually take your photographs? These are the sorts of things I help my couples work through when I photograph weddings around the Hunter Valley.

Getting married in the Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley has such a different feel depending on where you are getting married. Some weddings are surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, while others have gardens, rustic buildings, open spaces or more modern reception areas. That variety is one of the things I love about photographing weddings in the area. Your photographs do not have to look exactly like everyone else's. The venue, the season, the light and the two of you all make a difference. And sometimes the best photographs happen somewhere you did not even think would be worth photographing.

How much wedding photography time do you actually need?

This is one of the first things I would recommend thinking about when planning your wedding photography.

There is no magic number of hours that every couple needs. A smaller wedding with a short ceremony and reception might only need a few hours of coverage. A larger wedding with getting ready photographs, a ceremony, family photographs, couple portraits and a reception will obviously need more time. It really comes down to what you want documented. If you want photographs from the morning while everyone is getting ready, photographs of the details, your ceremony, family and friends, couple portraits, speeches and the reception, you will need to allow enough time for all of those things without making your day feel rushed. The good thing is that your photography timeline can be built around your wedding rather than trying to fit your wedding into a generic photography schedule.

When should you take your couple portraits?

The light can make a huge difference to your wedding photographs.

Hunter Valley weddings can have beautiful open landscapes, and that gives you plenty of options for portraits throughout the day. If your ceremony is earlier in the afternoon, we can often use some of that time for photographs before the reception. Then, if the timing works, heading outside again later in the day can give you completely different light. Golden hour is particularly beautiful around the Hunter Valley, especially when you have open views and plenty of space around the venue. You do not necessarily need to spend an hour taking photographs either. Sometimes a short amount of time away from your guests is enough to create a completely different set of photographs.

Do wedding photos have to be heavily posed?

Absolutely not.

This is something I think about a lot when I photograph weddings. There are photographs where I will give you direction, particularly during your couple portraits and family photographs. But I am not interested in making your entire wedding day feel like one long photoshoot. A lot of the photographs I love most are the ones that happen naturally. Someone laughing during the speeches. Your partner looking at you when you are not paying attention. Your friends dancing. Your parents watching the ceremony. The little moments happening between everything you planned. My approach is to give you enough direction that you never have to stand there wondering what you are supposed to do, while still leaving plenty of room for the day to actually happen.

Making the most of your Hunter Valley wedding venue

One of the best things you can do when planning your wedding photography is to think about your venue from a photographer's perspective. Where is the best natural light? Where could we photograph your couple portraits? Is there somewhere quiet where you can step away from your guests for a few minutes? What does the venue look like at different times of the day? These things can make a bigger difference than people realise. I also do not think every photograph needs to happen in the most obvious location. Your venue might have a beautiful vineyard view, but there could also be a tiny garden path, a doorway with gorgeous light or somewhere behind the reception space that gives us something completely different. That is where having someone who is comfortable looking for those little opportunities can help.

What happens if it rains?

Hunter Valley weather can be unpredictable, so it is always worth having a plan B. That does not necessarily mean cancelling your outdoor photographs. Some of the most atmospheric wedding photographs can happen when the weather does not go exactly to plan. If we need to move inside for some photographs, we can work with the available light and spaces at your venue. And if the rain clears for ten minutes, we can make the most of it. The important thing is not to let the weather become the thing you remember about your wedding day.

Family photographs and group photos

Family photographs are usually not the photographs couples are most excited about before their wedding, but they are often incredibly important afterwards. The key is keeping them organised. Before your wedding day, it is worth making a list of the family combinations you definitely want photographed. That means we are not trying to remember every combination on the spot, and your family photographs can be done efficiently without taking up a huge part of your day. Once those are finished, you can get back to celebrating.

Your wedding photographs should still feel like you

I think this is probably the most important part.

There is so much wedding inspiration online that it can be easy to start planning a wedding based entirely on photographs you have seen somewhere else. Pinterest is great for ideas, but your wedding does not need to look like someone else's wedding. If you are naturally relaxed, your photographs can be relaxed. If you are silly together, I want that to come through. If you are not comfortable posing, we can work around that. The photographs should document your wedding rather than turn it into something it was never meant to be.
