Photography FAQ | Everything You Need to Know Before Booking Your Photographer in Newcastle, Maitland & the Hunter Valley
Choosing a photographer is about so much more than finding someone who takes pretty photos.
You're trusting someone to capture some of the biggest moments of your life — your wedding day, your growing family, your pregnancy journey, or those tiny newborn details that somehow change so quickly.
I know booking a photographer can come with a lot of questions (and sometimes a little bit of nerves), so I've put together some of the questions I get asked most often to help you feel more comfortable before booking.
How far in advance should I book my photographer?
This really depends on the type of session you're looking for.
Wedding dates can book out well in advance, especially during the popular seasons like spring and autumn. If you already have your wedding date locked in, I recommend reaching out as soon as possible to avoid missing your date.
For lifestyle sessions, a few weeks to a couple of months notice is usually perfect. If you're wanting a weekend session or a specific sunset location, it's always worth enquiring early.
What areas do you photograph in?
I photograph beautiful moments throughout Newcastle, Maitland, the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie and the Central Coast.
I love travelling to new locations and finding beautiful little pockets of nature that suit each person, whether that's a beach sunset, an open field or somewhere meaningful to your family.
If you're unsure whether I travel to your area, just send me a message. I'm always happy to chat.
What should we wear for our photos?
This is probably one of the questions I get asked the most!
The biggest thing I always tell my clients is to wear something that feels like you. The more comfortable and confident you feel, the more natural your photos will be.
Because my photography style is light, airy and true to colour, I recommend lighter tones, soft neutrals, earthy colours and pastels. These colours complement my editing style beautifully and help create the timeless, natural look you see throughout my galleries.
You don't need everyone wearing the exact same thing either. I actually love when outfits coordinate rather than perfectly match. Different textures, layers and shades create a more relaxed and natural feel.
I would usually avoid bright neon colours, large logos or very busy patterns, as they can distract from the most important part of the image, you.
If choosing outfits feels overwhelming, don't worry. I'm always happy to help with styling advice before your session.
I also have a client wardrobe available with a collection of dresses carefully chosen to photograph beautifully and suit my light and airy style. You're welcome to borrow something from the wardrobe for your session at no extra cost.
What happens if it rains?
The weather is something we can't control, but we can work around it.
Sometimes cloudy skies create the most beautiful soft light, and sometimes rain can create really magical moments. If the weather isn't looking ideal, we'll chat through the options together.
My priority is always making sure you love your final gallery, so if rescheduling is the best option, we'll find another date that works.
We're awkward in front of the camera. Can you help?
Absolutely.
And honestly, this is probably the thing I hear the most.
Most people tell me they aren't "photogenic" or that they feel awkward having their photo taken. The truth is, you don't need to know how to pose that's my job.
I guide you with gentle prompts and natural movements so you never feel like you're standing there wondering what to do.
Some of my favourite images happen in the moments between poses, the laughs, the cuddles, the little looks you share without even realising.
What time is best for outdoor photos?
I am a huge lover of blue hour.
That beautiful time just before sunrise or after sunset gives us soft, flattering light that creates the warm, dreamy feeling you see throughout my work.
The light is gentler, skin tones look beautiful, and it helps create those timeless images that don't feel overly edited or trendy.
When should I book my maternity photos?
Most maternity sessions are best done between 28 and 36 weeks.
At this stage your bump is beautifully visible, while you're usually still comfortable enough to enjoy moving around and exploring during your session.
Every pregnancy is different though, so we can chat about what timing feels right for you.
How long does it take to receive my photos?
This depends on the type of session and how busy the season is.
Every image is personally selected and edited by me. I don't use automated editing or outsource my work because I want every gallery to feel consistent and true to the Naturalee style.
I take the time to make sure your final images are something you'll genuinely love looking back on.
Do you provide RAW photos?
No, I don't provide RAW files.
RAW images are unfinished files straight from the camera. The editing process is a huge part of creating the final artwork and bringing my style into each image.
Your gallery will include professionally edited, high-resolution images that are ready to print, share and treasure.
Can we print our photos?
Absolutely.
Your gallery includes high-resolution images that you can print yourself, and you'll also have the option to order professional-quality prints through your online gallery.
There is something really special about seeing your memories printed and displayed in your home rather than sitting hidden on a phone.
What makes a good photographer?
A good photographer is about more than just having a good camera.
It's about understanding light, knowing how to tell a story, and most importantly, making people feel comfortable enough to be themselves.
The photos I love the most are rarely the perfectly posed ones. They're the ones where you can feel the connection the little moments, the laughter and the emotions that make your story unique.
Why invest in professional photography?
Because these moments don't happen again.
Your children grow, seasons change and life moves faster than we expect. Photos become the memories you return to years later.
They're the images hanging on your walls, the ones you show your children when they're older, and the little pieces of your story that you get to keep forever.
