Where to Have Your Photo Session in Maitland & Surrounds
Maddies of Bolwarra
Maddies of Bolwarra has quickly become one of my top recommendations for photography sessions around Maitland. I've had the chance to photograph here many times over the last year, and every time I come back I'm reminded why it works so beautifully.
If you love gardens, old-world charm and a more romantic feel, this location has so much to offer. The cottage gardens, greenery, winding paths and heritage details create a beautiful backdrop without feeling overdone.
I especially love this location for maternity, couples and intimate family sessions. There are so many little pockets to explore, from soft greenery to more classic architectural details, which means your gallery feels varied while still keeping that natural, relaxed feel.
It's a location I often recommend to clients who want something a little more polished than an open field, but still want their photos to feel warm, genuine and like themselves.
Morpeth Common
Morpeth Common is one of those locations that doesn't look overly impressive when you first arrive, but once you're there and the light hits through the trees, it just works.
I've photographed a lot of sessions here over the last year and it has become one of my favourite recommendations for families, maternity sessions and portraits around Maitland. There is so much room to move, the kids can explore, and it never feels like we're forcing moments to happen.
One of the biggest reasons I love this location is the tree cover. A lot of outdoor locations really rely on that short golden hour window, but Morpeth Common gives us beautiful soft light throughout the day because of the shade from the trees. This makes it a great option for families who can't always make a sunset session work or for little ones who have their own routines.
The thing I love most about photographing here is that it feels relaxed. We can walk, chat, let the kids be themselves and capture those little moments that usually end up being your favourites.
If you're looking for somewhere close to Maitland that feels natural, earthy and not too "posed", Morpeth Common is always one of the first places I suggest.
Birubi Beach & Stockton Sand Dunes
If you're willing to travel a little further from Maitland, the Stockton Sand Dunes and Birubi Beach are honestly one of the most incredible locations for a photography session.
This location feels completely different to anywhere else around the Hunter. The huge dunes, open skies and endless sand create such a beautiful, minimal backdrop where the focus stays on you and your family. There’s something really special about walking through the dunes as the sun starts to drop — it feels a little like you've escaped somewhere far away, even though it's right here in our own backyard.
I love recommending this location for maternity sessions, couples and families who want something a little more adventurous. It’s perfect for those who love a more natural, earthy feel and don't mind getting a little sand between their toes.
The best part is that we aren't limited to just one look. We can explore the dunes, capture those wide open landscape shots, then make our way down to Birubi Beach for those soft coastal photos as the sun goes down.
It is a little more of a walk than some of the other locations I recommend, but the variety and the final gallery are always worth it. If you've been dreaming of those warm, golden, beachy photos, this is definitely one to consider.
So... Which One Should You Choose?
Honestly, I don't think there is one location that is better than the others. It really just depends on what you like and what feels right for your family.
Some people love the beach, some love the greenery and open spaces, and some are drawn to locations with a bit more character. They all give a completely different feel, which is why I always like chatting with my clients about what they’re hoping for before choosing a spot.
If you’re not sure, don’t worry. You definitely don’t need to have it all figured out before booking. I shoot at these locations often and I’m always happy to recommend somewhere that I think will suit you best.
At the end of the day, the location is just where we happen to take the photos. The important part is you being there with the people you love and having those moments captured while they’re still here.
